Am I a “REAL” person?

I thought this meme was interesting. Not everyone has to worry about these things, but the professor seems to think that is what “real” life is. It reminds me of the cleaning and organizing motivation videos you see on YouTube. I love YouTube, I do, but there is one thing that bothers me about most of the content being pushed now. Everyone is obsessed with being “real.” They share “real” mom life, “real” life messes, “real” life moments and “real” life food. Isn’t everyone real? Aren’t all our lives real lives? It makes me wonder if I am real. If someone’s home is immaculate and perfectly organized and clean literally all the time, does that make them not real? What about if their kids are not messy and are perfectly well behaved? Are they not real moms? Why is everyone so obsessed with being relatable? Don’t they know that everyone is different? Sure we go through a lot of similar things and we are all human, but this feels like a a massive overcompensation for the Insta-model phase the world has gone through.

Here’s my question though: Why shouldn’t you post a beautifully staged photo of a super creative recipe you tried that turned out perfectly? Or your yoga pose that you finally mastered? It’s okay to be proud of yourself. It’s okay to look at the positive things in your life. I feel like there is this emotional invalidation to each side of this coin. Perfectly posed Grams that make your ass look fucking great, clean and organized rooms, a beautiful view. That’s real, those are real moments in life. Yes, a huge mess your kids made literally right after you cleaned, a dirty toilet, and endless laundry, those are real moments too. We have to remember that we are all real. No matter what your life looks like, you are allowed to feel real.

As my dear therapist says frequently, “Emotions are not wrong or right. They just are, and you are allowed to feel them.” So, this is really just a post on my emotions about all the “relatable and real” content out here.

Well, I guess I’ll keep feeling what I feel, and hey, you go right ahead and feel what you feel too.
